Karara Mining Limited is a joint venture between Gindalbie Metals Limited and AnSteel, one of the largest iron ore producers and steel makers in China. Located 200km south-east of Geraldton, Western Australia, Karara is the largest mining operation and the first major magnetite mine in the Mid-West. It produces a premium, high-grade concentrate product for export to steelmakers.
With an expected mine life of 30+ years, it will underpin a long-term iron ore business and provide sustainable benefits to the regional community in which we operate. The operation includes a large open pit mine, complex ore processing and beneficiation plant and significant infrastructure and logistics networks.
We are seeking a qualified Principal Advisor - Health & Hygiene to join the site based Health Safety & Training team. The primary functions of this role are to recognise, measure, evaluate and control occupational health and hygiene hazards across Karara operations. The incumbent will also develop, implement and manage ongoing occupational hygiene programs designed to protect personnel from exposure to chemical, biological and physical hazards. The successful applicant must have demonstrated field experience in a similar senior level hygiene related role within the mining or resources industry.
This position is based at the Karara Mine Site and operates on a 5 days on 2 days off 4 days on 3 days off 9 days on 5 days off day shift roster.
Safety responsibilities;
- Demonstrate personal safety leadership by adhering to Karara's safety policies and procedures
- Role model safe work practices in all areas

- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and safety awareness
Key responsibilities;
Ventilation:
- Inspections and atmospheric sampling
- Examining and reporting on findings
- Operator, calibrate, maintain and report on any metering or monitoring devices
Noise:
- Collect noise data in a manner approved by DMIRS (Dept of Mines, Industry, Regulation and Safety)
- Collate data and report
- Develop and maintain planning documentation to reduce noise and present mitigation options
Radiation:
- Ensure safe systems of work are communicated and in place for the use and operation of radioactive substances, equipment and devices
- Ensure all shielding, safety devices, protective equipment and radiation monitoring devices are correctly stored, maintained and tested
- Maintain all records by the Radiation Safety Act or the regulations
General
- In collaboration with the Health Safety Training Manager, effectively liaise with relevant regulatory agencies as and when required
- Ensure all records of monitoring, measuring and recording of all activities relating to ventilation, radiation, noise and other hygiene related matters are kept in compliance with legislation and Karara's policies
- Conduct investigations into non conformance or exceedances
- Develop and deliver educational programs to improve awareness and compliance in Health and Hygiene related matters
Key qualifications & competencies
- Tertiary qualification in Occupational Hygiene or similar
- Certified Industrial Hygienist
- Surface Ventilation Officer
- Noise Officer
- Radiation Safety Officer
- Current C Class Drivers License
