Karara Mining Limited is a joint venture between Gindalbie Metals Limited and AnSteel, one of the largest iron ore producers and steel makers in China. Located 200km south-east of Geraldton, Western Australia, Karara is the largest mining operation and the first major magnetite mine in the Mid-West. It produces a premium, high-grade concentrate product for export to steelmakers.

With an expected mine life of 30+ years, it will underpin a long-term iron ore business and provide sustainable benefits to the regional community we operate in. The operation includes a large open pit mine, complex ore processing and beneficiation plant and significant infrastructure and logistics networks.

We are seeking a suitably experienced Senior Environment and Tenements Advisor to join our Environment & Communities team based in the Perth office.  There will be some required ad hoc travel to the Karara Mine Site. 

This Senior position is responsible for facilitating the delivery of environmental compliance reporting, coordinating the delivery of project approvals, overseeing the management of the tenement administration functions, and maintaining the Karara Environmental Management System.  and supervising site environmental activities relevant to exploration activities, including rehabilitation.

Key responsibilities of this role are;

Environment

  • Coordinate and maintain internal/external approvals
  • Implement, manage and roll-out Karara’s Environmental Management System to the Karara Senior Leadership Team.
  • Conduct environmental audits and inspections of exploration, construction and mining works against internal procedures and licence obligations.
  • Provide general environmental advice and support to the business.
  • Prepare statutory and other external/internal environmental reports required to ensure compliance of under State and Federal legislation, including (but not limited to) the Environmental Protection Act 1986, Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999, Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016 and Mining Act 1978.

Tenement Management

  • Manage compliance with tenement conditions in accordance with Department Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety requirements and incorporate these conditions into the HSEC department’s obligation register.
  • Coordinate and advise on the tenement acquisition process and associated agreements for existing and future tenements.
  • Engage with the relevant internal departments to ensure all tenements are kept in good standing.
  • Action statutory requirements of the Mining Act 1978 tenure including the payment of rents, rates, and taxes, reporting and internal notifications.
  • Monitor the compliance of Joint Venture partners (if applicable) to ensure they maintain tenements in good standing and provide them with all necessary support to protect the Karara’s interest.
  • Apply for new leases such as conversion and renewals, as required.
  • Monitor competitor activity and identify strategic acquisition opportunities to the Principal Advisor Approvals & Compliance as and when required.
  • Monitor procedures in accordance with key legislative changes.
  • Implement improvements in reporting of expenditure and work completed to ensure that reporting to regulatory bodies is accurate and auditable.
  • Implement tenement compliance monitoring software to ensure tenements are maintained in good standing.

Essential Qualifications and Experience;

  • Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline related to the role
  • WA ‘C’ Class Driver’s License
  • Understanding of WA legislation and approval processes
  • Proven experience in a similar role within the mining industry
  • A demonstrated knowledge, experience and understanding of environmental legislation, regulations and compliances including but not limited to the Mining Act 1978, Environmental Protection Act 1986, Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999, Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016
  • Previous experience in tenement management (desirable)
  • Certification in Environmental Management Systems (EMS) Auditing (desirable)
  • ArcGIS experience would be desirable
