Karara Mining Limited is a joint venture between Gindalbie Metals Limited and AnSteel, one of the largest iron ore producers and steel makers in China. Located 200km south-east of Geraldton, Western Australia, Karara is the largest mining operation and the first major magnetite mine in the Mid-West. It produces a premium, high-grade concentrate product for export to steelmakers.

With an expected mine life of 30+ years, it will underpin a long-term iron ore business and provide sustainable benefits to the regional community we operate. The operation includes a large open pit mine, complex ore processing and beneficiation plant and significant infrastructure and logistics networks.

We are seeking an experienced & highly motivated Tails Dam Operator Maintainer to join our site based Processing team, responsible for maintaining and operating the Karara concentrator wet tailings storage facility in a safe and environmentally responsible state.

The Operator will conduct both routine and non-routine tasks including, but not limited to: polyethylene pipe welding, polyethylene and steel pipe maintenance, tailings material disposal, water recovery, mobile plant operation, general labouring duties and other day-to-day housekeeping requirements

This position operates on an 8 days on 6 days off roster.

Duties & responsibilities:

  • Log operational and maintenance data as required.
  • Position manual valves and pinch hose clamps on the tails discharge lines.
  • Operate the decant pumping system, as required.
  • Inspect and monitor field equipment, dam wall integrity, pipework and pumps.
  • Ensure statutory compliance with environmental regulations.
  • Conduct general housekeeping duties within the Tails Dam area.
  • Identify and report maintenance issues.
  • Execute and monitor wet tailings deposition plan.
  • Conduct preventative maintenance and repair of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe, steel victaulic pipe and couplings, valving and spigots.
  • Execute Statutory Reporting on a daily, weekly and monthly basis.
  • Utilise light mobile equipment in a safe and efficient manner maintaining a high standard of tails dam area maintenance.
  • Maintain equipment service records, conduct pre start checks and ensure the availability of light mobile plant through routine inspection and reporting of faults.
  • Plan daily deposition and water recovery activities based upon operational and maintenance priorities.
  • Adapt to emerging priorities and a change in conditions that may arise in the processing plant working environment.
  • Identify opportunities to improve the operational effectiveness of the tailings dam area.
  • Escalate all operational and maintenance issues to the Production Superintendent according to escalation procedures.

Essential Qualifications & Experience:

  • WA ‘C’ Class drivers’ license
  • Qualification in Polyethylene pipe welding
  • Previous experience operating and maintaining a wet tailings dam facility in the mineral processing industry
  • Proven experience operating and/or maintaining light mobile equipment
  • Sound understanding of light mobile equipment, including pre-start checks and service records
  • Proven knowledge and understanding of hazards working in a processing operation environment

Desirable

  • Demonstrated experience working in a processing plant environment
  • Understanding of basic minerals processing concepts and equipment operation such as pumping, valves, conveyors
