Karara Mining Limited (KML) is a joint venture between Gindalbie Metals Limited and AnSteel, one of the largest iron ore producers and steel makers in China. Located 200km south-east of Geraldton, Western Australia, Karara is the largest mining operation and the first major magnetite mine in the Mid-West. It produces a premium, high-grade concentrate product for export to steelmakers.

With an expected mine life of 30+ years, it will underpin a long-term iron ore business and provide sustainable benefits to the regional community in which we operate. The operation includes a large open pit mine, complex ore processing and beneficiation plant and significant infrastructure and logistics networks.

We are seeking a qualified and highly capable site based Environment Advisor to join our Environment team. Reporting to the Environment Superintendent, this role is responsible for conducting environmental field work activities and supporting the environmental management and compliance for the Greater Karara Project through implementation and support of improvements within the Environmental Management System.

To be considered for this position applicants must be able to demonstrate sound knowledge and understanding of State and Federal Environmental Legislation with a background in similar roles within the mining or resources industry.

This role operates on an 8 days on 6 days off continuous rotation.

 

Key responsibilities of the role;

The Karara fieldwork program will include, assisting in inter department tasks as required, involvement in all related data collection, entry, management and accurate reporting.

As well as;

  • Environmental monitoring programs (i.e. flora, fauna, dust, air, water and soil);
  • Environmental data analysis and reporting;
  • Weed monitoring and management;
  • Feral animal management and trapping;
  • Wildlife care / native fauna handling;
  • Rehabilitation program including seed collection, direct seed distribution, nursery management and tube stock planting;
  • Environmental inspections;
  • Provide training and guidance on environmental topics;
  • Undertake all required tasks to ensure environmental compliance
  • Supervise and assist site visitors, contractors and temporary staff

Essential qualifications & competencies;

  • Tertiary qualification in Environmental Science / Management degree or similar
  • WA ‘C class’ drivers license
  • Proven experience in a similar role in the environmental industry (mining industry experience would be advantageous) 
  • Knowledge of State and Federal environmental legislation
  • Fauna handling training – snakes, fauna rehabilitation (desirable)
  • National Police Clearance
  • Permanent work rights in Australia
