Karara Mining Limited (KML) is an Ansteel Group company formed as a joint venture with Gindalbie Metals Limited. Ansteel is one of the largest iron ore producers and steel makers in China. Located 200km south-east of Geraldton, Western Australia, Karara is the largest mining operation and the first major magnetite mine in the Mid-West. It produces a premium, high-grade concentrate product for export to steelmakers.

 

The opportunity

This Perth office-based position is for a Senior Environment and Tenements Advisor to join our Environment & Communities team.

There will be some ad hoc travel to the Karara Mine Site to meet and assist with internal stakeholders as required.

This role is responsible for supporting Environmental and Tenement compliance reporting and approvals for the Greater Karara Project. This includes tasks associated with the maintenance of Karara Mining Limited’s Environmental Management System, and improvement initiatives.

 

To be successful in the role, the following is essential:

  • A Tertiary qualification in Environment, Geological Sciences or similar related to the role
  • 5 - 8 years’ experience in a similar role within the Mining industry (or other heavy industries) or consultancy
  • A demonstrated knowledge, experience and understanding of State and Federal environmental legislation, regulations and compliances including but not limited to the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act), the Environmental Protection Act 1986 (EP Act) and the Mining Act 1978
  • Previous experience in tenement management
  • Proficient in the use of the Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook and Excel
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, high attention to detail
  • Leadership training and experience (desirable)
  • Environmental Management Systems (EMS) Auditor with current organisational ISO14001 and ISO9001 certifications (desirable)
  • Knowledge and work experience in GIS and mapping software, preferably ArcMap (desirable)
  • National Police Clearance

Key Duties (but not limited to):-

  • Coordinate and maintain internal/external approvals and compliance
  • Implement and manage the Karara Environmental Management System and take a leading role in continually improving environmental performance.
  • Review environmental data and analyse trends for internal and external reporting
  • Develop environmental approval documents, including but not limited to approval application under the EPBC Act (Commonwealth), Part IV and Part V of the EP Act (WA) and the Mining Act 1978.
  • Prepare statutory and other internal/external environmental reports required to ensure compliance of licences and tenements
  • Lead document control reviews of internal environmental documentation to maintain functionality, compliance and contingencies to ensure relevant environmental impacts are effectively managed
  • Lead desktop compliance audits and site inspections/audits and identify suitable corrective and preventative actions for implementation
  • Manage compliance with tenement conditions in accordance with Department of Energy, Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety requirements
  • Coordinate and advise on the tenement acquisition process and associated agreements for existing and future tenements
  • Engage with relevant stakeholders and implement tenement compliance monitoring software to ensure tenements are maintained in good standing
  • Other tasks reasonably assigned by Principal Advisor Environment & Tenements in line with skill set, training and competency

 

About Karara Mining

Located 200 km south-east of Geraldton in the Shire of Perenjori, Western Australia Karara has an expected mine life of 30+ years. The operation includes a large open pit mine, complex ore processing and beneficiation plant and significant infrastructure and logistics networks. As part of the logistics network Karara owns and operates 80km of railway between Tilley Junction and the Karara mine site, linking the Karara Export Terminal at the Port of Geraldton, able to handle up to 16 Mtpa of export product from a dedicated berth, with associated rail and train unloading infrastructure.
