Karara Mining Limited (KML) is an Ansteel Group company formed as a joint venture with Gindalbie Metals Limited. Ansteel is one of the largest iron ore producers and steel makers in China. Located 200km south-east of Geraldton, Western Australia, Karara is the largest mining operation and the first major magnetite mine in the Mid-West. It produces a premium, high-grade concentrate product for export to steelmakers.
The opportunity
We are seeking an experienced GIS Coordinator to join our Environment & Communities team, based in our Perth office with some occasional site travel as required.
This role will provide environmental management, approvals, compliance, reporting, exploration and development of Karara’s resources through management and development of the company’s spatial information, associated processes and systems.
To be successful in this role the following is essential:
- Qualifications in Geographic Information Science (GIS) or Cartography
- Excellent working knowledge of Geographic Information Software (ArcGIS)
- Demonstrate experience in similar role within mining or heavy industry
- Experience in implementing and maintaining ESRI Portal and Server Systems
- Strong communication skills along with the ability to work autonomously
- Ability to work to strict timeframes and deadlines
- A current National Police clearance

Key Duties:
- Provide storage, capture, analysis and presentation of spatial information to facilitate informed decision making and reporting in a timely and cost-effective manner
- Give custodianship, supervision and quality control of the various spatial datasets and associated processes and systems
- Perform data analyses and data provision for various government and internal approvals, internal/external reporting and specialist consultant surveys (e.g. flora, fauna, heritage)
- Develop, implement, update and maintain GIS and procedures in line with departmental strategies, objectives and priorities
- Support Karara by providing a timely and effective service by way of preparation of various maps/plans/diagrams for reporting and general illustration, ensuring compliance with corporate standards
- Manage, maintain, promote and improve Karara’s web mapping system (Kmaps), including ongoing training of KML employees in the use of the system
- Ensure external datasets are kept current through the use of a data maintenance schedule
- Identify new and relevant datasets and incorporate them into the GIS in an effective manner
- Participate in the engagement of consultants and contractors within approved budgetary limits
- Train staff in the use of GIS to access information, explore spatial data and aid in decision-making, and provide technical input for spatial solutions as required
- Monitor existing methods of digital data capture, storage, manipulation and maintenance and recommend and drive improvements where required
About Karara Mining
Located 200 km south-east of Geraldton in the Shire of Perenjori, Western Australia Karara has an expected mine life of 30+ years. The operation includes a large open pit mine, complex ore processing and beneficiation plant and significant infrastructure and logistics networks. As part of the logistics network Karara owns and operates 80km of railway between Tilley Junction and the Karara mine site, linking the Karara Export Terminal at the Port of Geraldton, able to handle up to 16 Mtpa of export product from a dedicated berth, with associated rail and train unloading infrastructure.
