Karara Mining Limited (KML) is an Ansteel Group company formed as a joint venture with Gindalbie Metals Limited. Ansteel is one of the largest iron ore producers and steel makers in China. Located 200km south-east of Geraldton, Western Australia, Karara is the largest mining operation and the first major magnetite mine in the Mid-West. It produces a premium, high-grade concentrate product for export to steelmakers.
The opportunity
We are seeking an experienced Senior Environmental Advisor to join our Environment and Communities team, based in our Perth office.
The Senior Environmental Advisor is accountable for supporting the delivery of environmental approvals, compliance reporting, audits, and other environmental initiatives. They also assist with on-site environmental activities, including rehabilitation efforts, to ensure Karara meets its environmental obligations while continually improving the Environmental Management System (EMS).
To be successful in this role the following is essential:
- Degree qualification in Environment, Science or similar related to the role
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience of environmental legislation, regulations and compliances including but not limited to the EP Act 1986 and Mining Act 1978
- Ideally 5 - 8 years’ experience in a similar role within a mining company or consultancy
- Knowledge and work experience in GIS and mapping software, preferably ArcMap (beneficial)
- Proficient in the use of the Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Outlook and Excel
- A current National Police clearance

Key Duties:
- Coordinate and maintain internal/external environmental licences and approvals.
- Implement the Karara EMS and assist in continually improving environmental performance.
- Implement and contribute to the annual environmental workload plan.
- Maintain the integrity of the environmental obligations and risk registers.
- Review environmental data and analyse trends for internal and external reporting.
- Conduct desktop compliance audits and site inspections/audits and identify suitable corrective and preventative actions for implementation.
- Develop environmental approval documents, including but not limited to approval application under EPBC Act 1999 (Commonwealth), Part IV and Part V of the EP Act 1986 (WA) and Mining Act 1978.
- Prepare statutory and other external/internal environmental reports required to ensure compliance of licences and tenements.
- Coordinate and liaise with environmental consultants and contractors, as required.
- Conduct document control reviews of internal environmental documentation to maintain functionality, compliance and contingencies to ensure relevant environmental impacts are effectively managed.
- Provide general environmental advice to Karara employees and contractors.
- Delivery of environmental presentations, meetings or workshops, as required.
- Other tasks reasonably assigned by Manager Environment, Water & Exploration in line with skill set and competency.
About Karara Mining
Located 200 km south-east of Geraldton in the Shire of Perenjori, Western Australia Karara has an expected mine life of 30+ years. The operation includes a large open pit mine, complex ore processing and beneficiation plant and significant infrastructure and logistics networks. As part of the logistics network Karara owns and operates 80km of railway between Tilley Junction and the Karara mine site, linking the Karara Export Terminal at the Port of Geraldton, able to handle up to 16 Mtpa of export product from a dedicated berth, with associated rail and train unloading infrastructure.
