Karara Mining Limited (KML) is an Ansteel Group company formed as a joint venture with Gindalbie Metals Limited. Ansteel is one of the largest iron ore producers and steel makers in China. Located 200km south-east of Geraldton, Western Australia, Karara is the largest mining operation and the first major magnetite mine in the Mid-West. It produces a premium, high-grade concentrate product for export to steelmakers.

The opportunity

We are seeking a Rail Operator / Maintainer to coordinate operations in the train load out and assist with track maintenance activities to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the Karara train services. The role is predominately Operations (Logistics) focused with some periods assisting with track maintenance.

During operational periods the role involves monitoring and controlling of train movements in and out of the train loadout, continuous interaction with the train loading contractor around stockpile management, coordinating stockpile blending requirements, product sampling and daily reporting of product movements (Intermediate computing skills essential).

During maintenance periods the role involves assisting in activities relevant to the maintenance of the railway.

This position operates on a continuous shift roster and requires the incumbent to successfully complete a Cat 1 Rail Medical including drug and alcohol testing.

This role operates on an 8 days on and 6 days off / 7 nights on and 7 days off roster. DIDO from Geraldton (Company bus available) or FIFO from Perth. Self drive in/out from other Midwest regional locations is also possible.

To be successful in the role, the following is essential:

• Manual Class 'C' 'Driver’s License (WA)
• Intermediate level of Computer skills (Email, data entry, Excel etc)
• Able to undertake shift work
• Problem solving ability
• Able to work unsupervised
• Ability to coordinate multiple aspects of the supply chain
• Logistics experience
• ARC Infrastructure Track Accreditation (PO, POLO, POTV) - desirable 
• Track maintenance or rail operations experience - desirable 
• National Police clearance

Key Duties include (but are not limited to):

• Perform operations tasks for management of the train loading area out including controlling train movements, monitoring train loading activities and conduct other activities essential to the efficient supply of trains to the port.
• Compilation of daily production data relating to rail operations, train loading, and product stockpiling
• Ability to supervise contractors in the Train Loadout (train loading & stockpiling operations)
• Cooperate and work effectively with other departments to ensure company plans and targets are achieved.
• Assist with rail infrastructure inspections and maintenance to company standards, ensuring a safe and reliable rail system is maintained.
• Engage in continuous improvement to constantly seek better, safer and more efficient ways of undertaking activities and/or tasks.
• Follow direction and apply efficient practices to ensure rail operations and track maintenance is aligned with and successfully contributes to the achievement of Karara’s goals and objectives.
• Undertake other tasks as reasonably assigned by Line Manager in accordance with skill set and competency.

Located 200 km south-east of Geraldton in the Shire of Perenjori, Western Australia Karara has an expected mine life of 30+ years. The operation includes a large open pit mine, complex ore processing and beneficiation plant and significant infrastructure and logistics networks. As part of the logistics network Karara owns and operates 80km of railway between Tilley Junction and the Karara mine site, linking the Karara Export Terminal at the Port of Geraldton, able to handle up to 16 Mtpa of export product from a dedicated berth, with associated rail and train unloading infrastructure.
