Karara Mining Limited (KML) is an Ansteel Group company. Ansteel is one of the largest iron ore producers and steel makers in China. Located 200km south-east of Geraldton, Western Australia, Karara is the largest mining operation and the first major magnetite mine in the Mid-West. It produces a premium, high-grade concentrate product for export to steelmakers.

The opportunity

We are seeking an experienced GIS Coordinator to join our Environment & Communities team, based in our Perth office with some occasional site travel as required.

This role will provide environmental management, approvals, compliance, reporting, exploration and development of Karara’s resources through management and development of the company’s spatial information, associated processes and systems.

To be successful in this role the following is essential:

  • Qualifications in Geographic Information Science (GIS) or Cartography
  • Excellent working knowledge of Geographic Information Software (ArcGIS)
  • Demonstrate experience in similar role within mining or heavy industry
  • Experience in implementing and maintaining ESRI Portal and Server Systems
  • Strong communication skills along with the ability to work autonomously
  • Ability to work to strict timeframes and deadlines
  • A current National Police clearance

Key Duties:

  • Provide storage, analysis, and presentation of spatial data to enable timely, cost-effective decision-making and reporting
  • Manage custodianship, supervision, and quality control of spatial datasets, processes, and systems
  • Perform data analysis and provide data for approvals, reporting, and specialist surveys (flora, fauna, heritage)
  • Develop, update, and maintain GIS systems and procedures aligned with departmental goals
  • Support Karara with map and diagram preparation for reporting and illustration, ensuring compliance with standards
  • Manage and improve Kmaps web mapping system, including staff training
  • Keep external datasets current through a data maintenance schedule
  • Identify and incorporate new relevant datasets into the GIS
  • Engage with consultants and contractors within budget
  • Train staff in GIS use for decision-making and provide technical input on spatial solutions
  • Monitor and improve data capture, storage, and maintenance processes

About Us

Located 200 km south-east of Geraldton in the Shire of Perenjori, Western Australia Karara has an expected mine life of 30+ years. The operation includes a large open pit mine, complex ore processing and beneficiation plant and significant infrastructure and logistics networks. As part of the logistics network Karara owns and operates 80km of railway between Tilley Junction and the Karara mine site, linking the Karara Export Terminal at the Port of Geraldton, able to handle up to 16 Mtpa of export product from a dedicated berth, with associated rail and train unloading infrastructure.
