Karara Mining Limited is a joint venture between Gindalbie Metals Limited and AnSteel, one of the largest iron ore producers and steel makers in China. Karara operates an iron ore mine and associated infrastructure in the mid-west region of W.A.  The operation is designed for a +30 year mine life and production of 8Mtpa.  It comprises a long life and world-class magnetite deposit; dedicated rail infrastructure; and an integrated train load-out/ship loading facility at our Geraldton port operations.

Karara is breaking new ground with the development and ongoing operation of the first significant iron ore mine in the mid- west.

We have an opportunity for a qualified and highly capable Safety & Training Coordinator to join the site HSE team. The Coordinator is responsible for ensuring site based employees are trained to legislative requirements and training standards. The Coordinator is also responsible for promoting a positive health, safety and training culture in the workplace by collaborating, educating and partnering with leadership teams and employees across the organisation. The successful candidate must have excellent written and oral communication skills.

This role operates on a 8 days on 6 days off day shift roster and is FIFO from Perth or DIDO from Geraldton.

Key responsibilities;

  • Demonstrate personal leadership by meeting and promoting all Karara safety policy and procedure requirements
  • Role-model safe work practices and positive safety leadership 
  • Proactively identify opportunities for hazard control improvements
  • Conduct training and assessment for personnel, in line with Karara requirements to ensure all safety and operational targets are met
  • Assist the leadership team to ensure employees are suitably trained to safely and efficiently carryout the tasks required of in accordance with Karara standards, policies and procedures and statutory requirements.
  • Manage the Training and Assessment process
  • Develop and implement training plans for all Karara departments to manage compliance
  • Management and review of Training Matrix and Training Calendar
  • Review and update training packages and materials as required
  • Deliver all training material in line with the Karara Training Procedure
  • Participate in incident investigations and support the tracking of preventative actions through to completion
  • Provide specialist advice and support with regard to health, safety and training legislation, Karara safety policies and procedures
  • Deliver site inductions, toolbox talks and other health and safety training programs, as required
  • Support the Karara hygiene monitoring program by conducting atmospheric contaminant sampling and calibration of sampling equipment
  • Complete health, safety and training audits and inspections in accordance with the Karara compliance monitoring program and prepare reports clearly articulating findings, non-compliance and opportunities for improvement

Key requirements and competencies;

  • Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety
  • Cert IV in Workplace Training and Assessing
  • Certs/Competency - National Safety at Heights, National Confined Space, Natural Gas Test Atmospheres
  • Certificates or License - Skid Steer Loader / Telehandler / Front End Loader / Gantry or Overhead Crane / HRWL / Forklift / EWP / Dogging
  • Incident investigation techniques including ICAM, TapRoot and/or 8 steps / essential factors
  • Must have working knowledge of relevant legislation, particularly Mines Safety & Inspection Act 1994 and Mines Safety Inspection Regulations 1995
  • Solid background in similar role within the mining or heavy industry
  • Experience in applying Australian Quality Training Framework and Australian Skills Quality Athority
  • Proficient in MS Office
