Karara Mining Limited is a joint venture between Gindalbie Metals Limited and AnSteel, one of the largest iron ore producers and steel makers in China. Located 200km south-east of Geraldton, Western Australia, Karara is the largest mining operation and the first major magnetite mine in the Mid-West. It produces a premium, high-grade concentrate product for export to steelmakers.
With an expected mine life of 30+ years, it will underpin a long-term iron ore business and provide sustainable benefits to the regional community in which we operate. The operation includes a large open pit mine, complex ore processing and beneficiation plant and significant infrastructure and logistics networks.
We have an opportunity for a qualified and highly experienced Senior Hydrogeologist.
This role will perform strategic and technical water planning, site conceptualisation and licensing approvals functions to manage Hydrogeology and groundwater/surface water specific workloads. Key functions include developing water supply solutions for the business and revising Groundwater License Operating Strategies. Liaising with key Government and industry stakeholders and clients is a key element of this role.
This role is initially a 12 month fixed term contract.
Key responsibilities:
Safety:
- Demonstrate safety leadership by promoting and complying with Karara safety policies and procedures
- Role model and lead the way in safe work practices
- Actively engage in discussions to improve hazard awareness and safety
- Contribute to the development of continuous health and safety improvements
Technical:
- Develop and maintain effective water management documentation for water supply, dewatering, potable, wastewater and surface water to ensure compliance and operational water management on site.
- Assess long term water sources and actively identify methods of increasing water supply to site whilst maintaining required quality for operations
- Develop and maintain hydrogeological conceptual modelling for each groundwater resource
- Develop operational budgets as required
- Effectively interface and collaborate with Maintenance, Processing and Environment departments
- Develop and present proposals for long term sustainable water supply
- Develop and maintain groundwater license operating strategies
- Provide specialist hydrogeological input to Geological exploration drilling campaigns to identify any future water supplies
- Provide specialist hydrogeological technical input as required to operations

Key requirements:
- Post graduate qualification in Hydrogeology, Hydrology, Environmental Engineering or Environmental Science
- Membership of International Association of Hydrogeologists (Desirable)
- Strong background in water management within the mining/resources industry
- Strong background in interpreting complex ground water and other hydrometric data
