Karara Mining Limited is a joint venture between Gindalbie Metals Limited and AnSteel, one of the largest iron ore producers and steel makers in China. Located 200km south-east of Geraldton, Western Australia, Karara is the largest mining operation and the first major magnetite mine in the Mid-West. It produces a premium, high-grade concentrate product for export to steelmakers.

With an expected mine life of 30+ years, it will underpin a long-term iron ore business and provide sustainable benefits to the regional community in which we operate. The operation includes a large open pit mine, complex ore processing and beneficiation plant and significant infrastructure and logistics networks.

We have an opportunity for an experienced Principal Advisor - Approvals & Compliance to lead the Environment team based in the Perth head office. Reporting to the Environment & Communities Manager, this role is primarily responsible for the effective facilitation and delivery of approvals, corporate environmental systems, Geographic Information System (GIS) and other programs and services to meet internal and external obligations. To be considered for this role applicants must have a strong environmental compliance background in the mining or resources industry.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure that all regulatory environmental approvals and requirements are met within operational time frames
  • Ensure compliance program is developed, implemented and maintained in accordance with Karara's environmental risk register and management system
  • Take lead during annual environmental reporting period(s) ensuring that all reporting is complete and submitted within required time frames
  • Collaborate and work effectively with site based teams to ensure data integrity and adequate visibility of any site environmental issues
  • Ensure programs such as Ground Disturbance / Dust Monitoring / Rehabilitation and Closure etc are compliant
  • Ensure that the Environmental Management System (including policies, standards, procedures, objectives etc) is consistently developed and maintained according to relevant site operations
  • Monitor and audit Karara activities against environmental obligations
  • Mentor and effectively manage direct reports
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with key stakeholders including local, state and federal government, non-government organisations etc.

 

Key qualifications & competencies

  • Tertiary qualification in Environmental Science or similar
  • Environment Management System (EMS) and Quality Auditor
  • Previous experience in similar level leadership role 
  • Demonstrated experience with implementing risk management techniques
  • Strong background in similar role within the mining or resources industry
  • Demonstrated understanding of Western Australian and Commonwealth Government approvals processes
